Centered Physical Therapy specializes in providing personalized care for children and adults diagnosed with scoliosis, utilizing the principles of the Schroth Method.

The schroth method

Is a non-invasive physical therapy approach aimed at treating scoliosis, a condition characterized by an abnormal curvature of the spine. This evidence based method involves specific exercises and techniques designed to elongate the trunk, correct spinal curvature, and improve posture.

These exercises are tailored to each individual's curvature pattern and are only performed under the guidance of a trained Schroth therapist. This approach is recommended for children and adults diagnosed with scoliosis and other postural dysfunctions and is also prescribed for post-operative care for Spinal Fusion surgery.  The Schroth Method is often recommended as a complementary treatment alongside other interventions such as bracing or surgical options, especially for adolescents with moderate to severe scoliosis. It aims to improve quality of life, reduce pain, and prevent further progression of the spinal curvature.

Testimonials

Jesse H.

"

My name is Jessi H. and I am a 13 year old dancer with scoliosis. As a dancer of 11 years, I have experienced all types of injuries. My doctors explained that the only way to help scoliosis was bracing or surgery. Nothing else.

During my first pt appointment, Andrea made sure that I understood everything there was to know about my condition. She gave me hope that no other professional was able to give me. She made me feel comfortable in my body by making scoliosis positive. She not only educated me on the physical aspect of scoliosis, she gave me hope by changing my outlook on it as well. Surgery and scoliosis weren’t scary anymore because I knew Andrea would be by my side through it all. She felt personally invested and she gave me what I needed to get better emotionally and physically. Scoliosis was no longer a burden, but a perfection. Andrea taught me that the word “scoliosis” doesn’t have to be feared. Andrea gave me strength and made me fearless.

Frequenty asked questions

WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS?

Scoliosis is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal rotation and lateral curvature of the spine. Instead of the spine appearing straight when viewed from the front or back, it may have a C-shaped or S-shaped curve. This curvature can occur at any point along the spine, but it is most commonly seen in the thoracic (mid back) or lumbar (lower back) regions.

Scoliosis can develop at any age, but it most commonly appears during adolescence, particularly during the growth spurt just before puberty. Scoliosis often progresses during periods of growth, but may worsen if left untreated.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A SCHROTH EVALUATION?

Typically, the first visit is an extended evaluation where we examine and measure x-rays, evaluate spinal curvature, posture, muscle strength, range of motion, and any associated symptoms. Initial evals are our opportunity to discussed details of your past medical history and your primary current complaint . Part of our evaluation is to determine the musculoskeletal causes of these deficits and formulate a plan of care to build functional, pain-free independence. We will also begin our exercise program during your initial evaluation so that you may start your home program immediately.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING To
A SCHROTH EVALUATION?

We ask that you bring your most recent scoliosis study X-rays (imaging where the full spine is captured,) along any additional imaging or medical history.

Come comfortable! Exercise clothing is appropriate. Schroth exercises utilize visual cues using a mirror, for that reason we ask women to wear either a sports bra, bathing suit top or tight fitting tank top.
